During the 40 days of Lent, Catholics are invited to enter into a period of spiritual preparation just as Jesus spent 40 days in the desert in preparation for His public ministry. Our preparation is focused on three areas: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.

Prayer: We lift up our mind and heart to God in praise, gratitude, and petition to strengthen our relationship with Him. We can do this on our own or participate in parish prayer events such as Stations of the Cross (indoor or outdoor – NEW this year!), Eucharistic Adoration, and the Parish Lenten Mission.

Fasting: We abstain from food and drink for short periods of time to imitate Jesus and to show sorrow for our sins. Fasting can also take the form of giving up something that we like (such as chocolate or alcohol) or ending a bad habit. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obligated to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics ages 14 and older are to abstain (not eat) meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent.

Almsgiving: We give money or goods to the poor out of love for our neighbor. We can do this through the Rice Bowl donation drive or through donations to St. Francis Outreach, Catholic Charities, or other charities that care for those in need of help.
